Aurora Del Sabor Mexican Food Truck

Image
When I think about local favorites, one of the first places that comes to mind is Aurora Del Sabor Mexican Food Truck. Even though it isn't a CHamoru food business, it's definitely one of my favorite places to eat. Aurora Del Sabor started back in 2021, selling food out of their home in Dededo across from Guam Home Center. Not long after, they got a food truck and started setting up at the Harmon Cost-U-Less on Saturdays. As more people discovered them, they began showing up at pop-up events all over the island. These days, you can usually find them at the Tuesday Dededo Night Market, the Wednesday Night Market at the Chamorro Village, and plenty of other food truck events around Guam. One thing I really like about this business is the story behind it. The owners are a family from Mexico City, and from what they've told me, the money they make from the truck helps support their church here on Guam. I've asked them a few times when they're going to open a restaurant ...

Local artist: Aundrya Manglona

Image
By: Ciann San Nicolas     As a local girl who loves to support local artists, one of my all-time favorites is run by artist and small-business owner Aundrya Manglona. Her shop, AundryaMCreations, is full to the brim with beautiful artwork come to life in the form of stickers, pins, and more! I chose to spotlight this artist because I appreciate how she pulls from her culture and background to showcase her roots. Aundrya is a regular vendor at the Sunday Night Market in Tumon and at Chamorro Village on Wednesdays. For those off-island or unable to make it to her physical pop-ups, she has an online shop where she sells her products.      I'd also like to shoutout Aundrya because she is a former student of Inalåhan Middle School, and I learned recently that she collaborated with Ms. Angela Andersen to create the IMS SY 2022-2023 yearbook! It's awesome that she was able to use her gift to give back to the community that she came from.  Instagram: @aundryamcreat...

Bloom Guam

Image
If you've ever needed a beautiful mwar mwar, lei, or floral arrangement for a special occasion, Bloom Guam should be your go-to. This locally owned floral business has become a favorite for many on Guam, creating beautiful pieces that showcase the beauty of our island and culture. Bloom Guam was founded in 2022 by Malesso native Carmela Tyquiengco. While this isn't her first small business venture, she's previously owned businesses specializing in jewelry and even shaved ice, it seems she's found her calling with flowers. Since opening Bloom Guam, she has built a loyal following and has become one of the island's most sought-after floral artists for leis and mwar mwars.  Although Bloom Guam is best known for its gorgeous mwar mwars and leis, Carmela also creates wedding bouquets, boutonnieres, and custom floral arrangements for all kinds of celebrations. I've personally ordered several pieces from her over the years, including leis for graduations, a bouquet ...

Pictured above is the cream cheese roll and the ube flavored rolls Location: Agat, Guam If you’re looking for one of the best bakeries in Guam, I highly recommend Pop Bake Shop! This bakery has been around since I was young and was always my favorite place to go. Their signature cream cheese rolls are absolutely amazing—soft, fresh, and perfectly balanced with a rich cream cheese flavor. They even offer a delicious ube cream cheese roll that is a must-try for anyone who loves local island flavors. Every baked item tastes like it was made with care and attention to quality. One thing to know: get there early! Pop Bake Shop is incredibly popular, and people travel from all over Guam to get their favorite treats and meals. When they’re sold out, they’re sold out. Once the day’s baked goods are gone, they close for the day, which speaks volumes about the freshness of everything they serve. Their pan de sal is some of the best around—fresh, fluffy, and perfect for breakfast or a quick ...

Let’s Celebrate with CHamoru Pastries

Image
Malia’ ta Silebra I Fina’mames CHamoru Let’s Celebrate with CHamoru Pastries Keeping Guåhan’s Sweet Traditions Alive When a family celebration begins in Guåhan, the air fills with laughter, conversation, and the warm smell of pastries made with love. No party, fiesta, or gathering feels truly complete without the sweet taste of buñelos kamuti, buñelos aga’, and titiyas manha waiting on the table. These pastries are more than food; they are memories, lessons, and traditions passed from one generation to the next. I call them my favorites not only because they are delicious, but because my grandparents taught me to understand their value. They reminded me that not everyone can make these pastries. Preparing them takes patience, strength, and time. Each ingredient comes from the local harvest, raised and gathered through the hard work of the men and women of Guåhan. Every bite carries the story of our island, our families, and our people. That is why we must keep these l...

Southern Spotlight: Dukduk Shave Ice

By: Ciann San Nicolas      Tucked by the quiet Merizo shore, there is a hidden gem called "Dukduk Shave Ice." In a sleek silver Airstream, owner Donovan serves refreshing, deliciously sweet treats that are perfect for maipe days on Guåhan. Dukduk Shave Ice is my personal favorite southern spot for a sweet treat because not only are the desserts scrumptious, but the prices are fair and the views are impeccable. At only $5 per shave ice (with no limit on flavor choices), it's a perfect place to bring the whole family to cool down. Beyond shave ice, Donovan also serves Americanos and homemade mango ice cream!      It's important to note that Dukduk Shave Ice only takes cash, so be prepared before stopping by! They are open Tuesday-Sunday from 11 am - 4 pm. There is a nice, shaded place to eat your treats right by the Airstream. There are also 3 picnic tables right by the sea for a truly picturesque afternoon. They are located right across from C&J hotdog s...
